Secondary Glazing
Hampshire's family-run secondary glazing specialists since 1985
Not every window needs replacing. Secondary glazing is a practical and cost-effective solution that adds a separate inner pane to your existing window, improving thermal efficiency, reducing noise, and enhancing security – without disturbing the original frame or character of your property.
At Fletcher Fabrications, we design and install secondary glazing systems to suit a wide range of properties across Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire, and the wider South East. Whether you’re looking to cut heating bills, reduce traffic noise, or meet conservation area requirements, our team can advise on the right system for your needs.
What Is Secondary Glazing?
Secondary glazing involves fitting a discreet, independent inner window behind your existing frame. Unlike double glazing, which replaces the entire window unit, secondary glazing works alongside what you already have. The inner panel is typically fixed to the window reveal or frame and can be designed to open for ventilation and cleaning.
Because no structural changes are made to the original window, secondary glazing is fully reversible – making it an ideal choice where planning restrictions or listed building consent apply, or simply where the existing window is in good condition and worth retaining.

The Benefits of Secondary Glazing
Improved Thermal Performance
Secondary glazing creates an insulating air gap between the two panes, significantly reducing heat loss through the window. This can make a noticeable difference to room temperature and heating costs – particularly in older properties where the original single-glazed windows offer little thermal protection.
Noise Reduction
One of the strongest cases for secondary glazing is its acoustic performance. The wider air gap achievable with secondary glazing – compared to a standard double-glazed unit – makes it especially effective at attenuating low-frequency noise such as traffic, rail, and aircraft sound. For properties close to busy roads or in flight paths, the difference can be significant.
Enhanced Security
An additional inner panel provides an additional physical barrier at the window, making forced entry more difficult. Secondary glazing can be fitted with quality locking mechanisms to further improve the security of ground-floor or otherwise accessible windows.
Conservation Compliance
Because secondary glazing leaves the original window entirely intact, it is widely accepted by local planning authorities and conservation officers as an appropriate upgrade for listed buildings and conservation areas. If you are unsure whether your property has restrictions, our team can help you understand your options before any work begins.
Reduced Condensation and Draught
By creating a more stable thermal environment at the window surface, secondary glazing helps reduce condensation on the inner pane. It also acts as an effective draught barrier, eliminating cold air infiltration around older frames.
Surveyed, Supplied, and Installed by Our Own Team
Every secondary glazing installation we carry out is surveyed, supplied, and fitted by our own employed team – the same people who handle our full window and door replacements. We do not subcontract the work, which means consistent standards and a single point of contact from your initial enquiry through to the finished installation.
We take accurate on-site measurements and manufacture or source panels to fit your exact openings. Frames are available in a range of colours and finishes to blend with your existing windows as closely as possible.
